The cutting process was about us recorded using high-speed digital video photography. Concurrently with these tests, low-speed cutting tests were conducted inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to understand the cutting process better. The cut angle was influenced by the distance of the point of first contact about us (between the blade and the hair) from the hair base, with the line of cut moving in the direction of the hair axis as the distance from the base increased.

Qualitative data obtained from video-recordings and still photographs made during the cutting tests, carried out in situ in the SEM and the high-speed cutting rig, indicated four dominant cutting mechanisms of hair, documented in this paper. The parameters of distance between the initial point of contact and the base of the hair and the moisture level were those controlling the mechanism of failure.
